Synth-rock band Orgy first gained fame with a cover of New Order's "Blue Monday." The single sold 1 million copies, catapulted the band to the top of the modern rock and dance charts, and introduced New Order to a new generation of fans. Orgy singer Jay Gordon hopes the group's new EDM-tinged rock single "Wide Awake and Dead" and forthcoming EP have similar success. Jay Gordon (center) resurrected Orgy with a new lineup. You reformed Orgy in 2012 and released "Grime of the Century." Why is now the right time to bring Orgy back? Well, why not? And I just didn't want the brand to die. Why were you forced to get a new lineup? What's going on with the other members? Forced? Hmm...well, nothing against the old guys, but it just didn't seem to be like it was happening, and I felt like I would have been waiting around forever, because they were busy with other projects. From the beginning, I created and owned the name Orgy -- the past members and I had a partnership in which I qualified the name. You said that your new single, "Wide Awake and Dead," was inspired by a lot of folks you see in LA, who look like their brains have fallen out. Please elaborate. It's a lttle bit over the top, but it's just an observation of some of the persons you run into, living like zombies. Like, where are you? What can you tell us about the new EP? Well, it's in production. There are lots of name ideas floating around still, so we'll have to see what the new lineup and I come up with. The sound is for sure new for Orgy, a fresh take on things, trying some new sounds and song styles -- more on the EDM side of things but still with an aggressive rock edge that this band will crush on stage. Why did you want to cover New Order's "Blue Monday" as a debut single, and do you think its success took attention away from your original material in any way? Actually, a story that has never been out: it was down to "Blue Monday" or Frida from ABBA's "There's Something Going On." At the final end of the day, "Blue Monday" felt like a better fit. And not really, the original material has done great. You've brought your son, Jax, onstage with you at Orgy shows. Does he want to follow in your footsteps? helperhey there.
